Fairbourne Visitor Information
Fairbourne sits on the southern lip of the Mawddach estuary, perched precariously at sea-level on the reclaimed ‘morfa’ or marsh-lands beneath the cliffs at the foot of Pen y Garn. Fairbourne Map & Directions
Much of the town’s present layout is due to the efforts of Sir Arthur McDougall (of self-raising flour fame) who, with the arrival of the railway in 1865, attempted to develop the area into a popular seaside resort to serve the English Midlands.
During McDougall’s development of Fairbourne (which was originally to be called South Barmouth), a narrow gauge tramway was constructed to serve the building works. This rapidly became a popular tourist attraction, especially after its conversion from horse power to steam locomotive. The Fairbourne Light Railway is still a popular reason to visit the town.
The town boasts a beautiful long sweeping beach and a number of shops and restaurants to serve the visitor.
For something a little different, why not explore some of the remains of 20th century military activity in the area. From hill-top memorials to beach defences, there are over 50 different sites in and around the Mawddach Estuary to be explored on foot, by bike or by car. See here for further details.

A number of places in the town and surrounding area offer accommodation ranging from self-catering lets to hotels. There are also caravan parks to the south of the town, and these are well served by bus connections in the season.
Public Transport
